Vaccines Don’t Cause Autism, But That’s Not The Point. Stop Being Ableist.

My daughter is Autistic and I wouldn’t trade her for the world

The Belle Jar

Here are some typical arguments put forward by parents who choose not to vaccinate their otherwise healthy child (by “healthy” I mean they’re not asking they’re not asking for an exemption because the child is immunocompromised or otherwise couldn’t medically tolerate vaccinations).

For this example, I will pull quotes directly from a recent New York Times Article, Vaccine Critics Turn Defensive Over Measles:

Off Topic: Vaccinations

All this. ALL OF THIS. My daughter has Aspergers syndrome. I wouldn’t cure her for the world and I find it disgusting that people believe death is better than living with autism.

My mom has lung cancer. you wanna believe my kids and I are up to date on all our shots, including the flu shot. My husband is always up to date because of his military service, but anyway, there’s the human cost right there. My mom can’t get vaccinated anymore, we can.

OH YEAH also, guess what, there’s a Meningitis Type B outbreak at a university not so far from my house. You know what prevents Meningitis Type B? Vaccination! Two students have passed away from this disease so far. The Disney Measles has now spread to Toronto. This is my not impressed face.
